PHB 95
Beforehand, Lucas and Deasy had been preparing everything needed for the childbirth process for a long time. They had prepared all the necessities for both the mother and the baby in a single bag, which they had even placed in the car in advance. They intentionally did this so that if any emergencies arose later on, Lucas and Deasy wouldn’t have to bother with it.
However, in the end, none of their preparations were used. Deasy unexpectedly gave birth earlier than the doctor’s previous estimate and calculation.
As he continued to wait for Deasy, who still hadn’t regained consciousness up to this moment, Lucas chose to step into the baby room with mixed emotions. His heart seemed chaotic, unsure of what to do.
Initially, Veronica and Darwin wanted to accompany him, but they decided to give Lucas some space and time first, so they let him go alone without any disturbance.© 2024 Nôv/el/Dram/a.Org.
Entering the baby room, an instantly calming and gentle aroma wafted in, greeting Lucas’s sense of smell. By God, he had never once before smelled such a pleasant fragrance. But for some reason, it felt familiar and delightful to him. Before anything even happened, he already felt comfortable and wanted to linger in the room.
Continuing forward, Lucas found a nurse who appeared busy checking each of the many babies in the boxes lying in the room. Realizing it, the nurse turned and smiled kindly at Lucas.
“Can I help you, sir?” the nurse greeted.
“I… I want to see my newborn child. The doctor said it’s a boy.”
The nurse nodded and continued to smile warmly, “May I know the mother’s name?”
“Deasy,” Lucas replied. “Her name is Deasy Winterborne Morales.”
“In that case, it’s over here.”
The nurse then pointed to the baby’s box at the front. Lucas walked over and gently lifted the baby who had been lying peacefully in the box.
“This is your baby, sir. The one born to Deasy Winterborne Morales.”
Lucas’s heart immediately raced for a reason he couldn’t fathom. Slowly approaching, his eyes caught the sight of a tiny baby dressed all in blue, complete with mittens, a cap, and a matching blanket.
His cheeks were chubby and rosy. His thin lips were just like Deasy’s that he had kissed many times. Moreover, his thick eyebrows, slightly brownish hair, and sharp nose all proved that the baby had inherited a lot from him.
The baby’s slight movements and wiggles brought tears to Lucas’s eyes instantly. If he could curse himself, he wanted to for being so emotional and crying repeatedly for reasons he didn’t understand.
For some reason, there was a strange urge and unfamiliar feeling compelling him to shed tears.
“Earlier, the baby cried a bit, sir,” said the nurse. “Maybe he was thirsty. But after a while, he fell back asleep. If he wakes up and cries again, there’s a possibility we might have to give him formula milk, considering your wife still hasn’t regained consciousness until now.”
Lucas simply nodded. Whatever was best for his little baby, he would do anything.
The nurse then approached and handed the baby to Lucas.
“You should try holding him. It’s important to form a bond or chemistry. Usually, from birth, babies recognize the smell of their parents.”
“Hold him?”
“Yes, sir. You should try. The baby will be calmer in his parents’ embrace.”
“But… I’ve never held a baby before, Sus. Is that okay?” Lucas asked, feeling a bit nervous.
Although Lucas had been accustomed to carrying his pet cats or dogs, which were even larger and heavier, he believed that it would be a different feeling when he held his own flesh and blood. After all, this was his first experience of holding a baby.
Seeing Lucas’s hesitation and obvious nervousness, the nurse immediately smiled. Instead of answering Lucas’s earlier question, she gently guided the baby in his hands to shift into Lucas’s embrace.
Although a bit awkward and stiff, Lucas managed to hold his baby correctly. He continued to gaze in wonder and emotion.
“How’s it, sir? Easy, right? Holding a baby isn’t difficult, especially your own.”
Lucas’s heart raced again as he held his own flesh and blood for the first time. His heart warmed as he tried to stroke the baby’s cheek, and the little angel responded for the first time, wiggling in his arms.
“You should give your baby a name, Luc.”
From the doorway of the baby room, Andreas appeared. The middle-aged man walked in, approached, and then looked at the baby, who now appeared peaceful in Lucas’s arms.
“Dad is sure you’ve prepared a name for your baby, right?”
Lucas nodded.
“Yes, Dad. Lucas and Deasy have agreed to name our baby Jonas Fernando Morales. The name means a completer and bringer of happiness to the Morales family.”
Andreas smiled broadly. He seemed to strongly approve of the name his son had just given.
“A good name, Luc. Dad wishes your child becomes a devoted and proud successor of the Morales family.”
“Lucas hopes that Deasy will regain consciousness soon, Dad. Deasy needs to see that the little baby she’s been waiting for has been born healthy and nothing is missing.”
Andreas nodded. Placing his hand on Lucas’s back, he gently reassured him not to sink into sadness again. He understood that his son must be anxious and worried about Deasy’s condition right now.
“You be patient. Dad is sure Deasy will be just fine. Didn’t you say before that Deasy is a strong woman?”
Lucas nodded, remembering that he had said that to his father.
“Yes, Dad. Lucas knows.”
“In that case, don’t worry, Luc. Dad is confident that Deasy will wake up soon, just like before.”
In his heart, Lucas silently agreed with his father’s prayer. He hoped that God would grant his request for Deasy to quickly pass through this critical time and awaken from her slumber.
“Lucas.”
From the direction of the room’s door, Darwin suddenly appeared. He approached and then conveyed something important to Lucas.
“Yes? What’s going on, Win?”
Darwin took several deep breaths, trying to calm himself, and then continued with the news he had delayed.
“You need to go to Deasy’s room right away.”
Lucas’s heart pounded rapidly. Hoping for good news this time, he handed the baby, who had been peacefully sleeping in his arms, to the nurse.
Without asking any more questions, Lucas hurriedly made his way to the room where Deasy was. When he arrived, he found Veronica standing anxiously in front of the room.
“How is it, Ve? What’s wrong with Deasy? Has she woken up?”
Veronica shook her head. Her face clearly displayed tension and seriousness.
“No, Luc. Deasy is still unconscious.”
“And then?”
“Her condition is deteriorating. Right now, the doctor is performing a procedure in there. Let’s all pray that after this, Deasy’s condition can return to normal, and she can wake up.”
Once again, Lucas froze. Instead of receiving good news, he was confronted with a shocking reality. He hoped that God would be on his side and not separate him from the woman he loved so dearly.
