Love At Last

Few seconds of truce

Cayden

Seeing her on the bed only made me feel guilty. I did this to her and there was nothing I could do to make her feel better. I felt like all I’d done so far is hurt her and that’s not okay.

“Hey Lily, I’m sorry. I didn’t know that you were allergic to lilies. I’m so sorry, it’s all my fault…”

She placed her hands on mine, calming me down

“It’s okay Cayden. It’s not your fault, you didn’t know, okay? Don’t be too hard on yourself, I’ll live, I’m not dying.”

“I know but I should have found out first. I’m such a dumbass. It’s shameful and not something to be proud of you know, not knowing things like this about your girlfriend…”

She laughed “it’s okay Cayden, no need to beat yourself up about it and I’m fine. It’s nothing serious just a reaction. I’ll be discharged later today.”

I smiled and kissed her hands “okay babe, I’ll stay with you until you’re discharged so I could drop you home. I’m not going anywhere, my eyes are on you”

“No Cayden, you don’t need to do that, grandma will be here soon, she’ll take of me” she paused and continued, “besides, she’s very angry with you about this whole stuff and doesn’t want to see you at all. So I think you should stay out of my radar for at least, 3 days???”

I smiled, “don’t worry love, I settled that before coming here. I went to your house first before coming here. I did all the apologizing and making up I had to do for her to forgive me and she did, eventually. She’s the one that gave me your address too, that’s how I knew where to find you.”

“Oh my! For real? That’s a change. She must like you to have forgiven you so quickly. I’m surprised! That barely happens”

“Have you met me? I’m very forgivable baby! Face card never declines!”

“Yeah, ” She said and we laughed

I stared at her as she lay on the bed, her eyes sleepy but she still looked very beautiful. My heart was at ease, being with her. She was on a drip and a machine in the room kept beeping, monitoring her heart rate. I’m glad she’s okay.

“Quick question though, why did you decide to send me flowers out of the blue? I was pretty shocked you know, it’s unlike you to do that…”

Unlike me? But she deserves it anyway.

“I’m so sorry, I was just trying to do a romantic gesture and make you feel special you know. We’ve been so distant with work, you’ve been overstressing yourself, working and working like that workaholic you are”

We laughed

“But you’ve not had time to go out with me. I needed to make you see or have a feeling of how special you are to me differently and extravagantly, that you won’t necessarily need to leave work, you know.”

She started laughing so hard. I didn’t realize what I had just said was funny.

“I’m sorry Cayden, I didn’t mean to laugh like that but why would you think that I don’t already know how special I am to you? Come here” She tapped the bed with her hand, indicating that I sit next to her on the bed.

“I know how you feel about me Cayden and I appreciate the grand gesture it’s heart warming” She squeezed my hand affectionately and continued

“But I already know how special I am to you. I know you love me and I feel the same way towards you Cayden. A bunch of flowers, romantic? Yes, but it won’t tell me that. It’s all here” she placed her hand on her chest.

I stared at her, such a nice and sweet woman. I’m so in love with her and nothing can change my mind about that.

“I love you, Lily”

“I love you too Cayden”

I leaned towards her and kissed her as if my life depended on it

“Okayyy, you can stop now lovebirds… Get a room ” Jarod said, interrupting.

“Well, technically we’re in a room,” I said, pointing to the hospital room we were in as we laughed.

“How are you doing girl?” Jarod asked as he walked towards Lily, on the bed

“I’m alright, can’t wait to go home. Can you grab me something to eat? I’m hungry”

“Sure,” I said, walking out. I gave her some time to talk with Jarod, at least I trust him now.

I saw a vending machine and checked if I had quarters to put in. Luckily, I did. I got her a soda and a bag of chips. That should handle the hunger, I guess.

“Here you go my love,” I said as I handed it over to her.

“Aww, y’all are gonna make me cry. Some Romeo and Juliet story” Jarod teased

“Oh please Jarod, stop whining. You know you could wait outside, yea?”

“And miss all this free drama I’m getting? No way. Don’t worry, do you, I won’t make a sound.” He sat on the chair at the entrance of the room.

“Where’s my baby?” Mrs Annie said as she walked into the room

“Grandma!”

“Do you want to get up from the bed? Stay there baby, I’m already coming to give you my hug” She said to Lily as she walked to her and covered her in a tight embrace.

“How are you feeling now?”

“I’m much better Nana, doctor says I’ll be discharged soon”

“That’s good” She turned to me “Cayden, hope you took great care of her before I got here?”

“Nana?!”

“I have to ask my dear, he has to learn. If not for now, then later”

“Oh my God,” She said and covered her face feeling embarrassed

“Just the facts”

“That’s fine Lily” I turned to Mrs Annie ” yes ma’am, I’ve been doing my best”

“Alright then, that’s what I want to hear”

The doctor came in an hour later

“You’re free to go now, Miss”

“Thank you so much”

She turned to me “can you please drop me at home?”

“Sure”

“Alright,” she smiled.
