Chapter 22
A Wedding Dress?
"Harper? Sorry, it's Lauren." Lauren's gentle voice drifted over the line.
Harper paused. Then, she asked indifferently, "Why are you answering his phone?"
"Benjamin asked me to hold it while he's in the bathroom. Maybe you could call back later? Or if you have time, you could come over. We're picking out a wedding dress, and it will be great if you can join us and offer some advice. You are the expert, after all."
Hearing Lauren mention they were choosing a wedding dress, Harper froze.
She was stunned, and a sense of coldness flickered in her eyes as she repeated, "You said you're picking out a wedding dress?"
"Yes, Benjamin says I'm getting better day by day. Once you two are divorced, we can start planning our wedding. We can take the wedding photos in advance, so we're not rushing later. You wouldn't mind, right, Harper? You never liked Benjamin anyway."
Harper responded calmly, "Of course, why would I mind? I am so happy for you two. So, is this all Benjamin's plan?"
"Yes, Benjamin is very good to me. He's always so thoughtful, making sure I'm never put out," Lauren replied softly. Harper said nothing. She didn't want to trouble them anymore. "Alright then, I won't keep you two."
"Harper, aren't you joining us?"
Harper didn't respond and hung up as if she hadn't heard.
She was an architect, not a wedding dress designer. What was the point of joining them? Designer their home?
She couldn't understand how Lauren could say such things.
Unlike her, who had never experienced such things and never would, Lauren was truly a woman bathed in happiness.
Though Lauren had slept for a year because of Benjamin, what she gained was his wholehearted devotion and a lifetime of love.
And Harper, she was nothing.
What Benjamin was doing seemed utterly ridiculous to Harper.
He had just said today that he needed to delay the divorce for his grandfather's sake, yet the next moment, he was off choosing a wedding dress with his sweetheart, ready for wedding photos. Harper wondered if he had taken her as a fool.
She smirked mockingly, her delicate face filled with pain.
She placed her hand on her abdomen, whispering softly, "Baby, I'm so sorry. I can't give you a perfect home, but I promise, I'll love and protect you more than anyone else could."
Because of that phone call, she assumed Benjamin was not coming home tonight.NôvelD(ram)a.ôrg owns this content.
Although he kept saying he would not betray her during their marriage, going with Lauren to pick out a wedding dress was a betrayal to Harper.
Harper kept telling herself to stop thinking about it. After all, the outcome wouldn't change. For now, she could slowly get used to the days without him.
She had a quick bite to eat, went back to her room to shower, and lay down.
But as she drifted, she felt the light shining on her and opened her eyes to see a man standing over her, staring down.
"Why is he back?" That was what she thought, and also what she asked aloud, "Why are you back?"
Benjamin's brow furrowed, and asked indifferently, "This is my home, where else would I go?"
"Weren't you supposed to be with Ms. Davis? I thought you wouldn't be coming back tonight."
"Harper, why have you been so prickly with me lately? Don't always bring up Lauren as an excuse to argue with me."
Benjamin's accusation and blame ignite the frustration Harper had suppressed all evening.
She sat up, facing the man before her, unwavering.
Her voice was cold as she retorted, "So, you think it's my fault? Can't you figure out why I'm prickly?"
