Chapter 2: Four Years of Darkness
Chapter 2: Four Years of Darkness
Four years later,
Alvera stood at the gates of the North Calgary Prison
and watched the heavy iron door shut.
She was free.
She opened her tightly clenched fist to reveal a pendant in her hand,
then she hung it around her neck.
In the distance, a black Audi honked a few times.
Alvera ignored the car and walked towards the nearest bus station, which was not far off.
Just then, the door of the Audi opened, and a young man got out from the driver's seat.
He looked at Alvera and shouted, "Dude!"
Alvera stopped in her tracks and looked back.
The sun shone brightly over her as she smiled at the driver.
The man got back in the car and drove closer. He rolled down the window and said, "I've been waiting
for you for a long time. Get into the car."
Alvera got into the passenger side, her expression quiet and calm.
"Is there any place you want to go in particular?"
"I want to visit my mother."
Samuel Lambert paused for a moment. "I'll drive you there."
"Your father... I don't think he will approve of your friendship with me. You're the young master of the
Lambert Group, and I've been to prison."
"Can you stop? I don't care that you've been to prison. It wasn't even your fault, to begin with. You
wouldn't have ended up in prison if it weren't for the Francois family."
Alvera clenched her fists tightly when he mentioned the Francois Family.
"What kind of relationship did Roland Francois and Andrina Earhart have back then?"
"They should have been together for some time already, seeing how Roland Francois was so dead set
on putting you in prison."
Alvera shook her head. "No, the day before my mother and I were thrown out, Thomas Earhart was
looking to set her up with a suitable man. If Roland and Andrina were together at the time, they
wouldn't do that."
"Yeah, you're right, Roland was the most popular bachelor in the high society of Calgary. All this talk
about the Francois family reminds me of that scum, Antoine Francois. He didn't even say anything
when his brother was framing you. He even promised me he would protect you forever when you guys
first got together. Bah, so much for his promises!"
"Don't mention him."
"I'm just so annoyed. He went abroad to enjoy his life these last four years when you were in prison.
You shouldn't believe in a person like him."
Alvera smiled without emotion.
Alvera stood silently by the sea at the place where her mother's ashes were scattered.
Samuel was about to leave quietly when Alvera asked, "Samuel, do you have a lighter?"
...
Samuel paused for a moment before passing her his lighter.
After he left, Alvera looked at the peaceful sea and said, "Mom, I'm free now."
She took two pieces of candy out of her pocket,
placed one of them on the soft sand,
and put the other in her mouth.
"This candy is very delicious. A friend in prison gave it to me. She told me that every time she felt like
crying, she would feel better if she ate some candy. It's true, I've tried it."
The sea breeze felt damp and sticky on her face.
Alvera took out several pieces of newspaper cuttings from her bag. After looking at them intently for a
while,
she flipped open the lighter and lit the papers on fire.
"Mom, I didn't get my revenge four years ago. From now on, I will get back everything I deserve. Property © of NôvelDrama.Org.
Andrina, I won't be reckless this time," she said.
The fire spread across the newspaper in her hand.
Through the flames, some headlines from the newspapers caught her eye.
"Roland Francois, the CEO of the Empire Group, and Andrina Earhart of the Earhart Group show their
affection on Valentine's Day. The wedding date is coming."
"The eldest daughter of the Earhart Group has a bad fever, which has been diagnosed as a fulminant
hepatic failure. She is in urgent need of a liver transplant."
She gently loosened her grip and let the tide sweep away the ashes.
Moments later, she raised her hand put it over her abdomen.
Four years ago, the Earhart Family threw her out because her liver was useless to them.
Now, her liver had value again.
This time, she would get back everything she was owed.
"Wait and see, Mum. I will make them pay for our tears with blood. I won't let you die in vain."
